Ghee – Also known as clarified butter, ghee can be used instead of coconut oil. It is also a healthy fat that improves assimilation and absorption of the spice compounds. Turmeric – Contains turmerones, curlone, curcumin, and other beneficial compounds that work at the cellular level. Don’t be fooled, turmeric and curcumin are WAY more sophisticated than just “anti-oxidants” as they regulate various signaling pathways to help control inflammation and influence gene expression. There are literally thousands of published papers on the amazing health benefits of Turmeric. However, it is difficult to increase cellular levels of the beneficial compounds unless you use bioenhancing spices along with turmeric.
Ginger – This bioenhancing spice works synergistically with turmeric and black pepper to increase its assimilation. Ginger contains a number of health-benefitting compounds like shogaol, zingerone, gingerol among others which have demonstrated a wide variety of protective actions in the body — only some of which include cough suppression, apoptosis of carcinoma cells, lowering blood pressure, and improving insulin sensitivity. There are hundreds of studies indexed in the literature showing the massive benefits of ginger.
Black Pepper – This major bioenhancing spice works synergistically with ginger, turmeric, and long pepper and contains a variety of compounds like pyrrolidines, amides, piperidines, and piperine. Piperine in particular has been shown to greatly increase bioavailability of many spices, vitamins, amino acids, and minerals by activating certain enzymes and inhibiting others.
Long Pepper – This spice has been used medicinally for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine as well as by the Greeks and Romans. It contains piperlongumine, a compound shown to have strong anti-cancer properties. In Ayurveda, ginger, black pepper, and long pepper are frequently used together and known as “Trikatu”.
Clove – A wonderful flavor enhancer, clove contains eugenol which has been demonstrated to have a number of anti-inflammatory properties and other compounds that act as an anti-fungal, modulate the immune system, and help the body deal with chemical toxins.
Cinnamon – Another great flavor enhancer, cinnamon acts on various pathways that help improve insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation, regulate blood pressure, and protect against ionizing radiation.
1-1/2 Cup Hot Water
1/2 Cup Organic Turmeric Powder (buy it here)
1 Tablespoon Organic Ground Ginger (buy it here)
1 teaspoon Organic Ground Long Pepper (buy it here)
1 teaspoon Organic Ground Black Pepper (buy it here)
2 teaspoon Organic Ground Clove (buy it here)
2 teaspoon Organic Ground Cinnamon (buy it here)
2/3 Cup Organic Virgin Coconut Oil (buy it here) or Grass-fed Ghee (buy it here)
Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl. Pour water in small saucepan and set on medium heat until water starts to bubble. Add dry ingredients to warm liquid, turn off the heat and cover the saucepan, allowing the spices to steep for about 5 minutes. With the water still warm, add coconut oil or ghee and stir. Stir paste occasionally, as the mixture to cools. Pour into glass container and store in fridge. Use heaping teaspoon or more per 8 oz of tea. Blend and enjoy.
And if you just can’t give up your coffee, you can blend in a teaspoon or more of the paste to your coffee instead. Or you can add a shot of espresso to the tea latte to make a “dirty” Turmeric Ginger Tea Latte.
